MIS CORAZONES ALEGRES - COLOMBIA

Care provision for elders in many parts of the world often relies on families, and standards of care outside the family are often inadequate to the holistic needs of older adults.

The Fundación Mis Corazones Alegres (My Cheerful Hearts Foundation) works to improve quality of life for elders by providing them with board and lodging and personal care in Medellín, Colombia, setting an example of high standards and dedication for others to follow.

The project has around 20 older adults in its care, and is currently working from a rented house in the Manrique area of Medellín.

Most of the adults cared for have very few economic resources and suffer from one or more serious disabilities including Alzheimers, the after-effects of stroke, diabetes, early-stage cancer etc. They are looked after by professionally licensed and trained staff.

The main objective of the foundation is to develop activities which help promote an active life for the residents through culture, recreation, physical exercise, work therapy and events which are conducive to family and community integration.

In recent years, Susila Dharma Britain has supported Mis Corazones Alegres with grants to improve the quality of physical infrastructure in the building and to provide support and evaluation for a programme of nutritional intervention.
